Lessons from the Pandemic

Interior of home after home remodel and new interior design

The meaningful impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic has led to many changes in our lives. Yes, I know, the pandemic has had a devastating effect on so many lives and many innocent lives have been lost as a result of it. But I am grateful to those in power who took the necessary measures to ensure our survival and continued success long after the pandemic has passed. The shutdown of our economy forced us to take shelter in the safety of our homes where many of us were forced to consider the quality of our own existence. Yes, there are many things that came out of this pandemic that we do need to be grateful for and the quality of our lives is one of the many. We have been blessed with enough time spent at home to realized how dysfunctional our lives have been and our homes reflect that dysfunction. We are now realizing the critical changes that must take place begin within our homes.

Given these considerations, we at Euro Design Build came up with two significant lessons that we can all take away from 2020, using them to move confidently into the new year.

We Learned That a Home Is More Than a Shelter

Before the events of last year, many individuals used their house as a go-between— a place to sleep, get ready for work, or freshen up before dining out, or an occasional entertainment of friends. Arrangements were made with venues for large gatherings and family vacations were on the other side of a long plane ride. That’s long in the past. We have moved on to more significant impact on our daily lives.

We have realized that our house is our sanctuary and so much more than just a shelter.  As such, our home should be designed for the way we want to live life and prosper with the ones who truly matter. Our loved ones.  Yes, our schedule is getting packed with calls to meet the needs of such home improvements that are critical to the quality of how we are choosing to live:

Private Spaces and Master Retreats

In a new world of social distancing, isolation has become more of a necessity than in years past. Whether in self-isolation from the rest of the family or seeking momentary refuge for emotional wellbeing, the enhancement of personal spaces in a home affords you that desired space for personal healing and comfort that’s so critical to our lives.  We are creating beautiful new private retreats.

Increased Entertainment Space

Entertainment spaces go far beyond the living room. Perhaps the most overlooked entertainment area of the home is the kitchen. As you may have experienced over the holidays and larger gatherings, most guests tend to congregate in the kitchen. It wasn’t until we were forced to live in our kitchen that we realized how dysfunctional the space and its intended purpose really is. For this reason, many have sought kitchen upgrade renovations for both function and aesthetic over the past few months. As we have discovered that a well-appointed kitchen is perhaps the most important place in a home.

Improved Home Offices

According to an Upwork study, 41.8% of the American workforce remains entirely remote. By 2025, this figure is expected to remain at around 22%, meaning that nearly ¼ of working Americans will be doing so from within home offices. These figures have never been higher and directly correlate to the newfound attention Americans are placing on their work from home spaces. Home offices are becoming a common and necessary part of any home renovation or remodel project.

Safety Above All

As with all change, there have been some negative outcomes resulting from spending more time in the home. One such issue has been the increased incidence of injury. There have been more falls, and as a result, more serious injuries than in years past. It is crucial that proper measures are taken, and appropriate features are in place to ensure your safety within the walls of your home.

Have a Beautiful and Safe Kitchen

Sturdy surfaces, skid-resistant flooring, layered lighting and lever handles are just a few key elements to consider when constructing a safe kitchen space. At Euro Design, we are experts in universal design and making sure your space is designed for you to age gracefully in your home.

Enhance Your Bathroom

Most falls happen in the bathroom. These incidents are avoidable and an unfortunate result of negligence in the design and bathroom remodel process. Features such as zero-threshold shower and tub entry, shower handles and benches, sufficient shower space, and reinforced walls and surfaces are some key safety considerations to keep in mind.

Luckily, we know exactly how to make your bathroom both beautiful and safe. For more information on how we incorporate safety into design, visit our blog. If you would like more information about your kitchen or bathroom remodel project, contact us today.
