The Importance of Trust: Why We Do What We Do
Our step-by-step design process began to develop as early as my childhood. We do what we do because of my personal story, one of trust being broken. This story profoundly affected my life so that authenticity, clear communication, and documentation are the main pillars of my personal life and work here at Euro Design Build.
I came to the United States when I was eleven. I was brought over by my estranged mother, who made promises she did not intend to keep; in fact, her motives were selfish in nature, to what degree I may never admit publicly. Perhaps, one day it will be possible.
While visiting our family and me on her vacation in Bosnia, my mother painted a picture of an incredible life that every little girl dreams of living, making promises that had no meaning. She aimed to get a little girl excited about going to America. In this country, she would have a much better opportunity for education and the love every child deserves, but this little girl never had while growing up with a step-mother and an alcoholic father.
It all seemed beautiful, but once we were on our flight to New York, she decided she could not wait until we arrived in the U.S. to tell me that life would not be how she had painted the picture for me to believe. She admitted she had a husband waiting for us in New York. She proceeded to open a pendant on her bracelet to show me a picture of the man in her life. I discovered it would be the three of us on that flight, and life would already be different from what I was told it would be.
With that story on the plane to New York, I instinctively knew there was more she was not telling me, and the only way to find out was to arrive and live through it. My first instinct was to get out of my seat and see if there was a way off the plane, but I knew it was already too late. There was no escaping this, and I would have to face whatever this woman had in store for me on the other side. I can only say, it was not a pretty life that this little girl dreamed of, but one filled with unimaginable abuse and a childhood that was cut short.
The price I paid to come to America was indeed too high. Still, I am proud of the person these events created, a woman who contains unwavering dedication and commitment to transparency. This person would never mislead anyone the way I was misled at such a young age.
