Christopher’s Dream Bathroom

DESIGNER’S STATEMENT

Although this bathroom had been recently renovated, it was too dark, and lacked the thoughtful planning needed for aging in place. It also failed to reflect the client’s style or provide the privacy he desired. The oversized corner tub, framed by two large bay windows, was particularly out of place for someone who never takes baths.

The client envisioned a masculine space anchored by a large, walk-in shower and equipped with plumbing fixtures that are safe, easy to use, and offer strong water pressure. His wish list included separate his-and-hers floating vanities with ample storage, a dedicated linen cabinet with a built-in hamper and adjustable shelving, and most importantly plenty of natural light without compromising privacy.

The overall goal was to create a bathroom that is effortless to enjoy and maintain, with custom cabinetry designed to suit his lifestyle, all brought together in a sleek, modern, and minimalistic design.

CHALLENGES

  • Relocating the shower to the former tub location, along with addressing the sewer line issues inherent to slab foundations.
  • Managing the overall sewer relocation for the new shower location within a concrete slab foundation.
  • Moving a tankless water heater that was installed on the exterior wall behind one of the vanities that interfered with a wall mounted faucet and its center.
  • Matching marble tile three months after the original order, when additional material was needed proved nearly impossible. To make the design work, we opted to reverse the dark and light marble placement, using the lighter stone on the perimeter walls in the water closet. This pivot ended up creating a stunning visual effect.

SOLUTIONS

  • Performed an E-Xray of the existing slab to locate post-tension cables and ensure none were cut during the concrete work needed to move the shower drain.
  • Successfully relocated the tankless unit by 3″ to re-center the plumbing line for the wall-mounted faucet.
  • Recognizing that matching natural stone after several months would lead to visible variation, we embraced the difference by inverting the marble color palette in the water closet. Using a lighter color with a subtle dark border in such a small space enhanced the design and turned a potential problem into an advantage.
