I have been out of my parent’s house for five years. During my first two years of college, I spent every holiday at home surrounded by my family, but as I got older and started working while going to school, visiting home for the holidays became tougher. I typically had to miss family Thanksgiving, but was fortunate enough to have been able to spend Christmas with them.
Last year, I moved to Dallas from Louisiana. It was the first year that I spent Christmas away from my family. Lucky for me, I had mine and my friend’s dog to keep me company while I watched holiday cartoons all Christmas morning. As peaceful and relaxing as that was, my heart still yearned to be home with my family. I missed the loud conversations of my uncles, who were more than likely arguing about something and agreeing with each other simultaneously. I missed sitting in the kitchen, smelling the hearty aroma of my grandma’s seafood gumbo. I missed hanging out with my cousins, catching up on life and the things we were going through. I honestly just missed being surrounded by love.
This year, I am fortunate enough to be able to travel home for the holidays to see my family and spend Christmas with them. I am able to do so because I have found a company who values the importance of family.
I started working for Euro Design Build in October, and in the last three months I believe I have found the place where I am supposed to be. Growing up, I was told it would be hard to find an employer who not only valued you as a part of the team, but as an individual person as well. From the very first moment I met Melinda and Seval, I knew they were two people who genuinely cared about their employees and wanted to help them succeed in every way possible. Even though my background is not in the construction industry, Melinda and Seval saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself. They took a chance when they hired me, and I am so grateful for that.
Since starting work here, I have gained a second family. Each day, we eat lunch together and share what is going on in our lives. We laugh at the silly things and sometimes cry in frustration together. Mostly we talk about our dogs. But no matter the topic, I always feel truly blessed by everyone on our team.
I have found a friend in Jonni, who has invited me over for dinner on multiple occasions. I have found an older sister in Shanna, who gives me advice on many different topics, whether it be what essential oils to use or general office knowledge. I have found an amazing boss and mentor in Seval, who always has a dad joke to tell the office and is eager to teach me about paint thinner and different materials we use in production. And in Melinda, I have found an amazing boss, mentor, and “mother hen,” as she likes to call herself, who goes above and beyond to make sure all of her employees and clients are taken care of.
I am thankful to have found a job where everyone feels like family. Working in this business can be stressful, but when you are surrounded by a strong support system, it helps to relieve some of the stress that comes with the job. We all care about each other and want to see everyone succeed, which is something that I have not found in any other job I have held. Getting up for work is not hard when you are surrounded by people you love and want to be with. I am thankful to be able to travel back home to Louisiana to see my family, but I am also glad that I get to enjoy this holiday season with my Euro family as well. I will forever be grateful to be able to call the employees at Euro Design Build my family.
