Which Should Come First? Bathroom Remodeling or Kitchen Remodeling

If you’ve decided to take on a home remodeling and design project in Plano TX, the first thing to do is choose which room to work on first. Ideally, you could knock out the whole house in one shot, but the reality is that costs and schedules prevent many from being able to take on such a large job.

When you start thinking about a renovation, you may need to decide whether to tackle the kitchen or bathroom first. Both are vital to everyday living and get a lot of foot traffic, so you’ll benefit from giving careful thought to the order of these renovations. While there’s no right or wrong answer, consider the following to help you decide:

Remodeling Return on Investment

While it is true kitchen remodeling often cost more than bathroom remodeling, they also typically yield a higher return on investment. So if you have plans to move in the foreseeable future, it’s worth giving priority to a kitchen remodel, as it will likely put more money in your pocket if and when the time comes to sell.

Where do you spend your time?

If you don’t have plans to sell you Plano home anytime soon, it’s a good idea to consider where you and your family spend the most time. For many, the kitchen is a communal gathering space where lots of family time and interaction takes place. If that’s true for you, then perhaps you’ll want to tackle a kitchen remodel first.

Schedule and Convenience

Any remodeling project comes with its inconveniences, but some have more than others. A makeshift kitchen can be constructed in alternative rooms with relative ease. This can, however, be inconvenient making preparing meals a hard task to handle. It is likely that you will be dining out more often during a kitchen remodel.

Keeping up Appearances

If you regularly host guests, you might deem it important to consider what they see upon entering your home. A bathroom under construction is easy to conceal behind a closed door, but a kitchen remodel will likely be an immediate eyesore for anyone stopping by.

Which takes longer?

Chances are, this is one of the first questions you’ll ask yourself if you have to decide between a kitchen or bathroom remodel, but we reserved it for last on this list because the true answer is: it depends. Some mistakenly believe that bathroom remodeling is less involved and takes a shorter amount of time, but that’s not always the case. While kitchens are generally bigger, bathrooms have elements like toilets, bathtubs and showers that can be time-consuming to install and replace.

Your best bet when deciding whether to take on a kitchen or bathroom remodeling project first is to make a careful plan. Think about what you’d like to change in both rooms, how often you frequent them and what you’ll use as an alternative when either is under construction. Once you figure that out, the decision ought to be pretty clear.
